There is an opioid epidemic in the United States. The statistics show:
- Since 1999, the number of prescription opioid overdose deaths have quadrupled
- From 2000 to 2015, more than 183,000 people died from prescription drug overdoses
- Over 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids
The most common drugs involved in prescription opioid overdose include:
- Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet)
- Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco)
- Methadone
- Fentanyl (Duragesic, Subsys)
Prescription opioid overdose deaths also often involve benzodiazepines. These are central nervous system depressants used to sedate, induce sleep, prevent seizures and relieve anxiety. Examples include alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan).
Naloxone can be used in the event of an accidental exposure or overdose from opioids. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist used to reverse opioid overdose. Taking too much of opioid drugs can slow down or stop breathing. Naloxone restores normal breathing and consciousness. It is a temporary drug that wears off in 30-90 minutes and only has a noticeable effect in people with opioids in their systems.

Narcan® is a prepackaged nasal spray which is sprayed into one nostril while the patient lays on their back.
Friends, family members and caregivers may give the auto-injector and nasal spray formulation of Naloxone to someone who has overdosed. As in any medical emergency, you should seek additional emergency care.
